Prague – Vienna via Český Krumlov

Day 1

Transfer Prague - Hluboka nad Vltavou

150km / 90 miles


The greatest tourist attraction in this town is the neo - gothic castle Hluboká with many gardens in its grounds. In addition there are many other things to see, for example 2km south west of the center you can find the Zoo "Ohrada". A further 10 minutes walk away you can see the 2nd largest lake in the Czech Republic "Bezdrev". Many types of water-sports are available here and if the weather is nice it is possible to swim. Furthermore in Hluboká is the gallery of renowned painter Mikolas Aleš, a luxurious golf course and one of the best sports relaxation complexes in the Czech Republic. We think that’s enough suggestions for spending your free afternoon there.

Day 2

Hluboka nad Vltavou - Cesky Krumlov

42km / 25 miles


Your first day cycling will be spent on cycle path number 12. You will travel along the Vltava river, through the town of České Budějovice, past the monastery "Zlata Koruna" before arriving comfortably in Český Krumlov. České Budějovice was founded in 1265 and is now one of the biggest cities in the Czech Republic. Several notable businesses are headquartered there, for example the brewery Budějovický Budvar (the original Budweiser), Madeta, Kohinoor, Motor and more. The South Bohemian university, theatre, museum and many galleries can also be seen. Also worthy of note is the town square with the town hall and black tower. With so much to see, this town is definitely worth visiting. Next on the route is the monastery "Zlata Koruna" which still has its original medieval atmosphere. Today it is thought to be one of the most valuable examples of Gothic architecture in central Europe. After the final 9km you will arrive in the world renowned medieval city of Český Krumlov. In order to have enough time  to get to know this beautiful city you will spend 2 nights there.

Day 3

You have 2 options for spending this day

a) Free day in Cesky Krumlov
b) Cycle Cesky Krumlov – Lipno Lake - Cesky Krumlov


a) For those who wish to get to know Český Krumlov it is best you have the whole day to do so. You can enjoy walks through narrow streets, enjoy nearby squares, visit castles and gardens or relax in one of the many local pubs.
b) For those who want to jump back on their bikes we have prepared a trip to the largest lake in the Czech Republic – Lipno. The lake is 42km long and in some places is 10km wide. Many water sports are available here. You can reach the lake from the small town Frymburk where the lakes width is not too great. If you have time and fancy a boat trip local public boat transport is available. It can take you and your bike to the other side of the lake in just a few minutes. This area is used by many skiers in the winter months, several ski runs are there. Also in the winter when the lake freezes it is used as an ice skating rink. You will return to Český Krumlov sometime in the afternoon to allow at least some time for sightseeing in the beautiful historic town.


Day 4 

Cesky Krumlov - Trebon

53km / 32 miles


You will cycle uphill from Český Krumlov and will be able to see amazing views of the town and the surrounding area. Via a route past the reservoir Římov, lakes and forests you will arrive at the spa town Třeboň. It is located near the Austrian border between the two large lakes Rožmberk a Svět. From 1379 the brewery Regent has operated there, one of the oldest breweries in the world. Třeboň is also known as a city of fishermen. The visitors should not really miss the fresh water fish specialties available in the many local restaurants. A visit to the Třeboň Renaissance chateau, which is one of the largest castle complexes in the Czech Republic, is recommended.


Day 5

Trebon – Telc

80 km / 48 miles


This is the longest stage of the tour. Your journey will take past many more ponds and lakes. Near the monument to Ema Destinova is a forested landscape which takes you to the northernmost point of Austria (near Hotel Peršlák). Then via the town Nová Bystřice you will have a smooth journey crossing the national park Czech Canada. Next is the greenways trail around the castle Landštejn and the lake of the same name. We will follow the marked cycle paths to discover the Renaissance town Telč. After a demanding journey you will certainly be in the mood for a gentle stroll through the beautiful local town square or maybe a visit to Telč castle. This town, just like Český Krumlov, is a UNESCO Heritage Site so there are certainly lots of things to see.


Day 6

Telc -  Vranov

55 km / 33 miles

This stage of the trip is not as long so you will have time in the morning to see more sights in Telč if you wish  before we set off along the marked paths in South Moravia to finish the day in Vranov nad Dyjí. This town is located below the Vranov dam in a valley next to the river Thaya. Even from afar, its massive clifftop castle. Castle Vranov is part of the National Park Podyjí dominates the landscape and is among the top destinations in Southern Moravia.


Day 7

Vranov -  Znojmo

39 km / 23 miles

Via the greenways trail, which runs along the border with Austria, you will arrive at the national park "Podyjí". This beautiful trail leads all the way to the town of Znojmo. The historical town which lies 75 km north-west of Vienna could also be called the gateway to the wine region of Southern Moravia. Every year the grape harvest is celebrated in Znojmo and a wine festival  “ Znojemské vinobraní“ is held which is visted by thousands people.


Day 8

a) Transfer Znojmo - Vienna
75 km / 45 miles

b) Znojmo - Mikulov
70 km / 42 miles

a) For the cyclists who decided to end their tour in Znojmo you will be taken straight to Vienna. You can spend a lovely afternoon and the rest of your holiday in the capital of Austria, a city of culture and history.


b) Everyone else will continue by bike for one more day. You will cycle over flat lands past vineyards, through small villages and further along the greenway trail to arrive in the town of Mikulov. This is a town with a rich history, a beautiful castle and square and many wine cellars which will certainly get your attention. Sitting in a cellar, tasting wine could be the highlight of the last days bike ride.


Day 9

Transfer Mikulov - Vienna

78 km / 47 miles

In the morning, we will take you to Vienna, the beautiful town on the Danube river. The Palace Schonbrunn, Belvedere, St. Opera, Hofburg, Prátr fun park and many other places you will certainly want to visit. You can try a classic Wiener schnitzel in a restaurant or visit a cafe for the world famous Sacher cake. The official program ends with the check-in to your hotel in Vienna. Important note: For cyclists who do not wish to end their tour in Vienna but would rather return to Prague, we can arrange the transfer.
